Bellingshausen Sea, Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica
Icebergs are pieces of ice that formed on land and come in all shapes and sizes. The term iceberg is used for chunks of ice larger than 5 meters (16 feet across). Smaller icebergs are known as bergy bits and growlers. Icebergs may seem static, but they are constantly moving unless they get caught up in shallow waters. About 90% of their mass is below the surface of the water, giving rise the popular saying “the tip of the iceberg”. Icebergs are formed when chunks of ice calve, or break off, from glaciers, ice shelves or a larger iceberg.
