Streets of Fez
Fez, Morocco
Fez (or “Fes”) was the capital of Morocco until 1925 and has long been considered the country’s cultural capital. Today, the city largely consists of two old medina quarters, Fes el Bali and Fes el Jdid, and the modern urban area of Ville Nouvelle constructed during the French colonial era. Fez is the second most populous city in Morocco. The Fez medina is one of the largest car-free zones in the world and is a UNESCO world heritage site. Since there are no vehicles to transport goods through the medina, you have many donkeys making there way through the narrow paths. I read that an estimated 100,000 people in Fez depend on donkeys in some way for their livelihood.
